Got to Give

October 22 - November 21, 2020

Empty Gallery is pleased to present 'Got to Give', a solo exhibition by Megan Dickie.

Megan Dickie is an artist who works in the mediums of sculpture, video, and textiles. Her artistic research uses extreme physicality, choreographed set-ups, and fantastic failures to upset dominant systems and structures.

Recent solo exhibitions include the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, L’Œil de Poisson (Québec City), Open Space (Victoria), Oxygen Art Centre (Nelson), Latitude 53 (Edmonton), and Stride Gallery (Gallery). Recent video works have been shown at UMW Media Wall (Fredericksburg, Virginia), TUFF (Toronto), BIDDU (Reykjavik), and Easter Bridge (St. John’s). She is also the recipient of project grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council, and the Univeristy of Victoria.

Megan received her MFA from the University of Saskatchewan and a BFA from the University of Calgary. Her works are part of the collections of the University of Saskatchewan, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Nickel Arts Museum.

‘Got to Give’ runs from October 22 to November 21, 2020. Visit the gallery during regular hours or by appointment.

What happens when we are forced to move in a completely different way? When the usual, forward trajectory stops and becomes stationary and timeless? How do we move then? Which actions take priority?

Got to Give encapsulates these very moments. The project focuses on relationships that are not bound by time, but instead are bound to each other. Without voice, language is felt through the skin and absorbed as a history of knowing beyond words. This new way of moving and communicating is embodied, and surpasses all external forces of time. The acts of care involved in dressing and undressing serve as an archive of this delicate connection, and in this timeless space an allegiance of movement is created, an allegiance to give.
